After guessing about new work: Banksy posts confirmation on Instagram

A new mural in London initially sparked guesswork and speculation. Now Banksy, who is associated with the work, posted the picture himself on Instagram.

When a bit of paint on a house wall can be even loosely associated with Banksy, there is usually a lot of excitement: an outdoor painting that appeared in London caused a stir in the British media on Monday. The solid green work is sprayed on a white wall behind a bare tree and, from the right angle, gives the impression that the tree has leaves on it. Below, in the style of the mysterious street artist, a woman can be seen holding a sprayer and looking at the work.

In his opinion, it was “definitely” a Banksy work, the BBC quoted its radio presenter and Banksy expert James Peak, who made a radio documentary about the graffiti artist. But with Banksy, whose identity is still unclear today, one never knows for sure, Peak said. There was initially no reference to it on Banksy’s Instagram account or website – but the artist has now published the work there himself. Peak had already drawn attention to the painting in the Islington district on Sunday.

Banksy: Works are sometimes traded for large sums of money

The green used was similar to the color used by the district administration on social buildings, said Peak. He added: “It’s spring now and this tree should be full of leaves, but Banksy must have cycled past and thought how miserable he looked.”

In the past, Banksy has repeatedly sprayed paintings on house walls and other surfaces at night. His mostly socially critical works are sometimes traded for large sums of money.
