At least 39 people died in a serious bus accident in the Pakistani province of Balochistan. Only a few occupants were rescued alive after the accident.

According to the AP news agency, 44 people were traveling by bus to the neighboring province of Sindh. The accident happened near the town of Bela in the Lasbela district.

The number of fatalities still fluctuates slightly: the dpa speaks of 39 people who died in an accident, the news agencies AP and AFP name at least 40 fatalities and the news agency Reuters quoted local media reports that there were at least 41 deaths.

According to various reports, three or four occupants of the bus have been found alive and taken to hospital with injuries.

Driver probably traveling at excessive speed

How exactly the accident could have happened is still unclear. According to the dpa, the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed and crashed into a bridge pillar. As a result, according to consistent reports, the bus fell into a ravine and burst into flames.

The bodies of the killed inmates must now be identified, as reported by the AP agency, citing local authorities. This is partly made more difficult by massive burns. Once the identification has been successful, the victims should be handed over to their families.
