Baguette wrappers to raise awareness of violence against women

Bread packaging pouches have taken on a new wardrobe. After Auch then Condom, in the Gers, it is in the district of Mirande that these pouches, on which violenceometers are printed, were distributed in bakeries. This system is part of the fight against violence against women.

A violenceometer ? As its name suggests, it is a tool for measuring the violent nature of the behavior that women may be victims of within their relationship. They are classified into three categories with a color code: green, for those deemed respectful; in orange, for those with a sexist, offensive, and/or problematic character; and in red, for violent and dangerous behavior.

An operation across the entire department

This system was designed in 2018 by the Observatories of violence against women of Seine-Saint-Denis and Paris, the En Avant Tout(s) association and the Paris City Hall, then taken over by the House for Gender Equality in 2021. It is above all a tool to raise awareness of violence against women, particularly in the Gers department, which is a rural area, where women can more easily find themselves isolated.

The packaging pouches were chosen by the prefecture and sub-prefecture, as a communication medium for its ease of entry into the daily life of all households, thus making it possible to reach and raise awareness among a very wide audience.

Domestic violence on the constant rise

This operation, initially launched four years ago, is continuing this year due to the constant increase in domestic violence. “It is imperative to remain mobilized and continue the fight to protect victims of all forms of violence,” explains Raphael Farges, sub-prefect of Mirande who went to a bakery for the launch of the operation in the borough.

In Gers, for the year 2022, the gendarmerie recorded 450 incidents of domestic violence and 201 incidents of sexual violence. As for the national police, 141 incidents of domestic violence and 38 incidents of sexual violence were recorded. At the national level, the security services recorded 244,000 victims of violence committed by their partner or ex-partner, an increase of 15% compared to 2021.
