When asked about the alleged Ukrainian drone strikes, Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told journalists: “Russia has attacked Ukraine. Russia is constantly bombing civilian targets in Ukraine, grain silos, hospitals, churches. And Ukraine is defending itself within the framework of international law.” The government in Kiev has not commented on whether the drones are Ukrainian attacks.
At a joint press conference between Baerbock and the Estonian head of department, Margus Tsahkna, he emphasized that Russia bears responsibility for everything that happens in Ukraine.
British: Russian bomber destroyed
Meanwhile, Ukraine again struck targets deep within Russian territory. According to British estimates, a long-range Tupolev bomber was destroyed in an attack on a military airfield. This fires inaccurate cruise missiles at Ukrainian targets, said the British Ministry of Defense. “This is at least the third successful attack on a long-range airfield, again raising questions about Russia’s ability to protect strategic locations deep in the country,” it said.
The Ukrainian military intelligence service also said that at least one strategic bomber had been destroyed and at least two others damaged.
Russia wants Ukrainian boats destroyed
For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry reported the destruction of two Ukrainian boats in the Black Sea. “Around 11:00 a.m. Moscow time (10:00 a.m. CEST) on August 22, east of Snake Island, a Russian army plane destroyed a US-made Willard Sea Force speedboat carrying a Ukrainian landing force,” the ministry said. A few hours earlier, the ministry had already reported the destruction of a Ukrainian reconnaissance boat near a Russian gas production facility in the Black Sea.

Explosions in Zaporizhia
The Ukrainian Air Force told Telegram that a group of attack drones had been sighted near the city of Zaporizhia in south-eastern Ukraine. According to media reports, explosions were later heard. Four high-rise buildings were damaged by the blast, City Council Secretary Anatoly Kurtyev wrote on Telegram. Nobody was injured.
Russia announced that it intends to significantly expand its own production of drones. The country often uses Iranian-made combat drones in airstrikes against Ukraine.
