Even if Putin didn’t intend it, the war against Ukraine meant “that we’re getting better with renewables.” That must also be the case in order to get out of the fossils, said Foreign Minister Baerbock in the daily topics.

Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has daily topics reiterates that CO2 emissions must be halved within the next eight years. “If we don’t fight the crisis together now, we will face even greater security challenges in the future than we already have today,” said Baerbock.

The big question in connection with the climate crisis will be the question of financing: “How do we provide funds so that we support the countries where climate change is already occurring most severely?” According to the Foreign Minister, this also applies to the development of technology so that renewable energies can be used all over the world.

“Even if Russian President Vladimir Putin definitely did not intend that this terrible war would lead to us getting better at renewable energies: this is the result now,” said Baerbock. It is becoming clear worldwide: “If we want to get out of fossils, then this can only be done with a massive expansion of renewable energies.” Construction of the facilities must now begin.

Developing countries concept

At the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, the Federal Government presented a concept for a protective shield against risks and damage in developing countries. The proposal is aimed at regulations for early warning systems in particularly vulnerable countries, precautionary plans and fast financing systems in the event of damage events.

Baerbock defended the Petersberg climate dialogue against criticism from NGOs, for example, that it had not provided enough concrete information. The main thing at the summit is to prepare for the climate conference in the fall.

After the conference, she emphasized that Germany would “not deviate an inch from our climate goals – on the contrary, we will get out even faster.” The federal government is “solid as a rock to the goal of climate neutrality by 2045”.
