Backhoes expected at Baumettes prison for its demolition

The hours of the walls of the historic building of the Baumettes prison in Marseille are counted. This Wednesday begins the operation of demolition reconstruction which will lead to the creation of a penitentiary establishment of 740 places in the place of this building built in the 1930s.

The demolition work is scheduled over seven months, for an estimated amount of 4.5 million euros excluding tax, specifies the Ministry of Justice. Reconstruction will begin in the spring and will be spread over three years. It will give birth to the building called “Baumettes 3”. That of the “Baumettes 2”, delivered in 2017, welcomed the detainees of the historic building whose destruction begins on Wednesday.

This demolition-reconstruction program is the realization of the plan announced in 2018 by the executive to create 15,000 new prison places to deal with prison overcrowding.
