A school in Beslan, a theater in Moscow, a train station in Volgograd: hundreds of people have been killed in terrorist attacks in Russia in recent years. The attack on a concert hall is reminiscent of earlier events.

Hundreds of people have died in terrorist attacks in Russia in the past. The attack on a concert hall near Moscow with more than 130 deaths brings to mind earlier events with many victims:

December 2013: At least 34 people die in a suicide attack with a nail bomb on the train station in the city of Volgograd. The attackers are said to have been radical Islamists.

January 2011: At least 37 people die in a suicide attack at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport. The Chechen terrorist Doku Umarov claims responsibility for the explosive attack as the mastermind.

Attack on school in Beslan

March 2010: Suicide bombers blow themselves up on two Moscow subway trains, killing around 40 people. Umarov is also behind this attack.

September 2004: More than 30 Islamists attack a school in Beslan (North Ossetia) and take more than 1,100 children, parents and teachers hostage. The terror ends with 360 deaths. The Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev is considered one of the masterminds.

October 2002: Chechen terrorists take more than 800 hostages in Moscow’s Nord-Ost musical theater. After three days, the police stormed the building after using a special gas. 129 hostages and around 40 terrorists die.

Bombings on residential buildings

May 2002: More than 40 people are killed in a bomb attack on a Russian military parade on “Victory Day” in the Second World War in the city of Kaspiysk (Dagestan). Radical Islamists are said to be responsible for this.

September 1999: Muslim rebels are attacking the border areas of neighboring Dagestan from Chechnya. According to the New York Times, 367 people are killed in a series of bomb attacks on residential buildings in Russia.
