Austria: The Mountain That Was Suddenly 100 Meters Lower – Travel

A call to Hermann Huber, Mayor of Galtür, about the summit on the Flühhorn massif that had disappeared after a rockfall, climate change and the consequences for tourism.

During a massive landslide in Tyrol, about 100 meters of the Flughorn collapsed. On June 11, at least 100,000 cubic meters of rock had loosened and fallen downhill from the southern summit of the Flughorn massif, which had previously been 3,400 meters high; no one was hurt. Experts see the disappearing permafrost ice in the rock as the reason for the landslide. The ice, which acts like glue for the mountains, is melting because of global warming. Hermann Huber (ÖVP) is the mayor of the small municipality of Galtür, which is close to the Flüchthorn and lives primarily from tourism.
