Augsburg: How the Lech should be renatured – Bavaria

The Lech should be allowed to flow again, at least on a ten-kilometer stretch before the gates of Augsburg. The “licca liber” renaturation project for this section of the Lech has been running for ten years, and the Donauwörth water management office has now presented the plans that it intends to submit for approval in autumn: The Lech may widen from 70 to 130 meters, tributaries and valuable areas for alluvial forests are created. According to planners, the project is unprecedented in Central Europe. The actually great joy among nature conservationists is still clouded: the energy company Uniper announced on Wednesday evening that it would examine the construction of a new hydroelectric power station – right in the middle of the nature reserve and “licca liber”.
