Where is the worst place to put your sofa?
When arranging the living room, the option that seems most obvious is to install the sofa against the wall. You might think that by placing the sofa at the back of the room, you free up space and thus optimize the space in the living room.
In reality, this location generally makes the sofa appear much larger than it really is. Furthermore, the space available in the center of the room is visually satisfactory, but it is in fact very difficult to use!
What location should you choose for the sofa?
So, what is the perfect location for the sofa? When it comes to interior design, it is essential to adapt to the specificities of the room. So there is no universal answer to this question!
Depending on the dimensions and configuration of the living room, you may not be able to choose the location of the sofa. In this case, it is recommended to remove the sofa from the wall anyway – even if only by a few centimeters.
This simple tip is all the more interesting if you adopt a corner sofa. Placed directly against the wall, it can indeed create the impression that the room is cramped. Slightly moved away from the wall, it becomes lighter and helps to visually enlarge the living room.
The best way to optimize space in the living room is often to place the sofa in the center of the room. It then becomes possible to use the wall space differently – for example by setting up a library or an office area in the living room.
By installing the sofa in the center of the room, you also free up space to install a decorative piece, a large mirror placed on the floor or indoor plants: all elements that give personality to the living room.
The sofa can serve as a separation in the living room, between the lounge area and the dining room area. A mission for the corner sofa!
The straight sofa also works perfectly to structure the space. We even take advantage of it to lean against it a desk or a low sideboard, or even to add a curtain.
Among the criteria to take into account when choosing the right location for the sofa: the bay window. It would indeed be a shame to deprive yourself of a beautiful view of the outside!
The location of the sofa is decisive when choosing the sofa itself. For example, if you opt for the sofa in front of the window, it is preferable to choose a model with a low back to let the light circulate. We also remember to keep enough space to access the window!
Doors and windows seem to make the arrangement of the living room impossible? All the more reason to invest in the center of the room, and we even dare to shift it by placing the sofa at an angle.
This can even be an opportunity to furnish the living room with two sofas, creating a chill, functional and dynamic space.
In addition to the location of the sofa, we think of the two essentials for a cozy living room: the rug and the coffee table. The latter should ideally be placed near the sofa. If you like to entertain or snack in the living room, consider choosing a table the same height as the seat of your sofa. This will allow you to grab what is placed on top more comfortably.
