Attempted arson at a day care center in Leipzig

The police counter-extremism and terrorism center (PTAZ) is investigating an attempted arson attack on a day-care center in the Lausen-Grünau district of Leipzig. As the State Criminal Police Office announced on Tuesday, unknown perpetrators had damaged the front door of a kindergarten with an incendiary agent over the weekend. There was no outbreak of fire.

Political background not excluded

The day-care center was not being used at the time of the attack, it said. The damage cannot yet be quantified. Since refugee children from the Ukraine are currently being cared for in the kindergarten, a politically motivated act cannot be ruled out.

Possible connection to weekend arson attack

Whether there is a connection with the attempted serious arson at the community accommodation on Liliensteinstrasse in Leipzig is the subject of further investigations, according to the State Criminal Police Office. Unknown perpetrators threw objects against the wall of the house on Saturday night. The building sustained minor damage and a small fire was extinguished. Nobody got hurt.

Post-attack protests

In response to the arson attack, around 1,300 people protested against right-wing extremist violence in Leipzig on Monday evening. The “Leipzig takes place” network called for the demonstration.
