Attacks in Waldkraiburg: pleading in the terror process – Bavaria

When he was arrested, he had pipe bombs and kilos of explosives with him: the trial against the man who wanted to attack Turkish institutions and mosques in Waldkraiburg is nearing completion.

After the attacks on Turkish shops in Waldkraiburg in Upper Bavaria in 2020, the federal prosecutor’s office is demanding thirteen and a half years in prison for the alleged perpetrator. From the point of view of the prosecution, the defendant should be placed in a psychiatric hospital because of his schizophrenia.

The representative of the Attorney General called on Thursday before the Higher Regional Court (OLG) Munich to convict, among other things, of attempted murder in 31 cases, serious arson, property damage, unauthorized possession of weapons and preparation of a serious act of violence that was dangerous to the state. The man, who described himself as a supporter of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS), had largely admitted the acts, but denied corresponding plans and spoke of a spontaneous act. In its plea, however, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office referred to this argument as a protective claim.

The man’s arrest on May 8, 2020 could have prevented further acts. When the police intervened, he had pipe bombs and kilos of explosives with him, which he had previously stored in his car in an underground car park in Garching an der Alz for a long time. In court, the defendant admitted that he had planned very different acts: attacks on several mosques of the Islamic Association Ditib, on the Turkish Consulate General in Munich and the Ditib Central Mosque in Cologne.

At the beginning of the trial at the beginning of March, the court had indicated that the young man might have a mental illness and that he would be placed in a clinic. The verdict in the proceedings could come on Friday next week (July 23).
