A fighting dog fatally injured an 87-year-old woman in Rhineland-Palatinate. Why the American Bully, which is not recognized as a separate breed, charged at the woman is unclear. The animal was not conspicuous before.

Fatal incident in a garden in Rhineland-Palatinate: When visiting relatives, an 87-year-old woman was attacked by their dog, bitten several times and critically injured. “The woman and the dog were known,” reported a police spokeswoman in Ludwigshafen. “The woman was regularly with her relatives and there have never been any incidents.” It was still unclear on Thursday why the American Bully attacked the woman in the garden of the Rheinauen municipality in the Palatinate on Tuesday. The woman died on the spot. Relatives had to watch the attack, but could not end it in time.

Animal and owner not conspicuous before

The animal and the owner were not previously noticed, the breed is not on the list of dangerous dogs in Rhineland-Palatinate, said the police spokeswoman. The investigators are currently most likely to assume a tragic accident. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of the woman’s death.

The dog owner has not yet been investigated. The dog was placed in an animal shelter. The veterinary office of the Rhine-Palatinate district decides whether he has to be put to sleep.
