At the hospital, it will now be a vegetarian meal for everyone every Thursday

This has been an obligation since January 1, 2023. In public collective catering, a vegetarian option must now be offered every day. In Brest, the university hospital center has decided to go even further by only offering vegetarian meals on the menu every Thursday. This will of course concern the staff of the health establishment but also the patients and residents who will be served a 100% vegetarian meal at lunchtime and in the evening starting this Thursday, September 21.

In line with the roadmap on ecological planning of the health system unveiled in May, the Brest University Hospital thus intends to “initiate a dynamic of food vegetation compatible with that proposed by the Citizens’ Convention for the Climate, one of the objectives of which is to reduce the consumption of meat and dairy products by 20% by 2030,” he explains in a press release.

A university hospital already engaged in the food transition

A pilot establishment in the Cool Food Pro project, which aims to support the collective catering sector towards sustainable changes, the Brest University Hospital has already initiated its transition by integrating more organic, local and vegetarian products into its menus. With already encouraging results for the Breton hospital which is pleased to have saved “more than 281 tonnes of CO2 in one year, or 49,000 m³ of water. »

To reduce their carbon footprint, Marseille hospitals also recently decided to halve the quantity of red meat served to patients.
