At the coronation in London: pomp, patriotism and a lot of police

It should be a festival for everyone, as King Charles III wanted. A contemporary adaptation of the historic coronation ceremony, a more modern, diverse monarchy. Was that her? And will that be enough to secure the new king’s popularity?

Anja, Lea and Christian from Düsseldorf weren’t bothered by the rain in London. The family flew in to London this morning especially for the coronation. But for a place on the Mall, the boulevard that leads to Buckingham Palace, they are already too late at half past eight in the morning, everything is cordoned off. “We’ll organize the next coronation differently!” Says Anja with a laugh, alluding to the relatively old age of King Charles III. The people of Düsseldorf are not royalists, they came in because of the spectacle.
