The Austrian actress Christiane Hörbiger is dead. She died at the age of 84 in her native city of Vienna, as confirmed by a family friend and a long-time employee.

She became known to an audience of millions with her roles in the series “The Legacy of the Guldenburgs” and “Julia – An Unusual Woman”. She also played in Helmut Dietl’s satire “Schtonk!” with the legal drama “Die Gejurenen” or the Dürrenmatt film “The Visit of the Old Lady”.

Hörbiger was in front of the camera for the first time as a teenager. In the 1970s she played at the Salzburg Festival, continuing a family tradition: her parents – Attila Hörbiger and Paula Wessely, a famous couple – and her sister had played there.

She was also on theatrical stages, but she found her true purpose in front of the camera. For her life’s work she was honored with the Bavarian Television Prize and the German Television Prize, among others.
