At least 15 dead in landslide following heavy rains

Drama in Indonesia. A landslide has killed at least 15 people in the province of South Celebes, in the center of the country. This accident took place following heavy rainfall, the Regional Disaster Management Agency announced on Sunday in a new report.

A total of 17 people were rescued from the landslide, which occurred Saturday evening in Tana Toraja district, said Sulaiman Maili, an official with the agency. “Two of these people survived and 15 died,” he said. “According to information from residents, two people are still missing and could still be buried,” he added.

Heavy rains fell on Tana Toraja and its region last week while the rainy season is not yet over in Indonesia. The landslide that occurred Saturday evening “was caused by heavy rainfall on unstable ground,” the agency said.

Indonesia experiences numerous landslides during the rainy season and the phenomenon has been worsened in some places by deforestation. In early March, flash floods and landslides on the island of Sumatra killed at least 30 people and dozens more remain missing.
