At least eleven people were killed in Russian bombardments on residential areas of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city on the border with Russia, the regional governor announced on Monday, saying he feared “dozens of deaths”.
“The Russian enemy is bombing residential areas,” regional governor Oleg Sinegoubov wrote on social media. “Because of these bombardments still in progress, we cannot call on the rescue services (…) Currently, there are 11 dead and dozens injured,” he added.
A city under control
On Sunday, Sinegoubov announced that the northeastern city of 1.4 million was under the ‘full control’ of Ukrainian forces, hours after announcing a Russian ‘breakthrough’ and street fighting . “What is happening in Kharkiv is a war crime! It is the genocide of the Ukrainian people,” he accused Monday, referring to “heavy artillery” fire.
