At FC Bayern, it burns ablaze after the end

Out in the quarter-finals of the Champions League – a disastrous result for Bayern. Now everything has to be on the table. And the bosses will have to answer some questions.

It was expected, now it’s a fact: FC Bayern is out of the Champions League. In the second leg of the quarterfinals against Manchester City, the German record champions made an effort, but in the end it just wasn’t enough. Now, after the DFB Cup, the second title is gone. The season is like a shambles – even if they still manage to win the championship title at the end.

Now everything has to be on the table. The causes must be ruthlessly analyzed and the bosses Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic must not be left out. You gambled and have to ask yourself: Was the change of coach from Julian Nagelsmann to Thomas Tuchel right?

Nobody knows how things would have gone with Nagelsmann in the past few weeks. However, until his dismissal he at least didn’t lose a game in the Champions League, but won them all.

A sobering record

Kahn and Salihamidzic wanted to stop the team’s undesirable developments and constant fluctuations in performance with the change of coach – and bring more stability into Bayern’s game with Tuchel. That failed. In six games with him as coach, they only managed two wins and two draws. In addition, Bayern suffered two defeats: a more than sobering record.

To blame only Tuchel for this would be wrong and too easy. The club bosses have burdened him with too large a mortgage. He didn’t have enough time to influence players and processes in the most explosive phase of the season.

There is unrest in the squad that has not been seen in Bayern for a long time, which is why there has been more talk of FC Hollywood lately. The skiing holiday plus injury to Manuel Neuer, Neuer’s interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” without the knowledge of the club, Serge Gnabry’s trip to Paris, the fight in the cabin between Sadio Mané and Leroy Sané – just a few examples of the chaos in the past few weeks.

That went completely wrong

In all of this, the bosses Kahn and Salihamidzic did not give a good picture: Kahn even fueled the unrest in the club and team by fighting a TV duel with Lothar Matthäus. Some fans held up a placard during the game against Manchester City with a clear message: “Brazzo + Kahn: Heroes of yore, whistles of today.” That hasn’t happened for a long time.

It’s ablaze at FC Bayern. The claim before the season was clearly defined: They wanted the treble – or at least play for all three titles for as long as possible. That went completely wrong.

What do Bayern have to do now? Find answers, and very quickly. If the championship title is also lost, then the fire will turn into a firestorm. And whether Kahn and Salihamidzic will then be allowed to help with the extinguishing – that is at least questionable after such a restless and sportingly disastrous season.
