Asmik Grigorian sings “Queen of Spades” in Munich – Culture

The story is dark, the society in it is dark and consequently the stage of the Munich National Theater is black and only equipped with few props. Director Benedict Andrews has placed the new production of “Queen of Spades” into this darkness. For this, Peter I. Tchaikovsky set Alexander Pushkin’s tired-of-life novella of the same name to music, the story of an increasingly crazy officer who has to decide between love and passion for gambling and chooses the latter. The director and composer provide a single ray of hope: Lisa. It shines particularly brightly in Munich because it is sung by Asmik Grigorian, the most sought-after soprano on the stage alongside Anna Netrebko.
