The “Four Last Songs” by Richard Strauss are something very special. Not just in the composer’s entire oeuvre, but in the musical canon in general. The late romantic orchestral song still offers sufficient scope for the underlying poetry and at the same time opens up its own cosmos of expressive possibilities, which pure piano accompaniment only makes possible to a limited extent. They are songs of farewell to life, of gentle transition.
