Once the French President at the time, Nicolas Sarkozy, had an interview with Angela Merkel. He suggested all sorts of things to her, proposed plans and projects, but the Chancellor didn’t really go along with Sarko’s long list of things to do. She instead explained to him, “Nicolas, I’m not as powerful as you!” A chancellor must take parliament, the federal states and the Federal Constitutional Court into account, which cannot be compared with the French presidential system. This is what Sarkozy told his employees after the talks, among them the current Economics Minister, Bruno Le Maire, who mentioned it in this documentary Germany – France: relationship status unclear by Olivier Toscer and Jean-Marie Magro.
