Art instead of jail: prison inmates play theater in Berlin – of all things “the robbers”

Art instead of jail: At the “aufBruch” theater in Berlin, prisoners act as actors. They are rehearsing Schiller’s “Räuber”. Not everyone makes it to the premiere.

Nine men stand in the rain. Jackets closed to the chin. Some have their peaked caps pulled low over their faces. The place: the open-air stage in Berlin’s Volkspark Jungfernheide, it has the shape of an amphitheater surrounded by trees, the wooden benches are weathered and partly overgrown. The men rehearse a scene newly added to Schiller’s “The Robbers”.
