Art by prisoners is shown and sold in the Straubing prison – Bavaria

27 prisoners from the Straubing correctional facility will show off their artistic skills at an exhibition at the weekend. On October 14th and 15th, visitors will have the opportunity to view and purchase around 1,000 exhibits. Before the corona pandemic, the show took place annually; it was canceled from 2020 to 2022.

According to a spokesman, the exhibits range from ceramics, paintings, woodwork, model making and garden decorations to Christmas decorations. While doing crafts, the prisoners may discover talents or interests that were previously unknown to them. They make the items in their free time. The majority of the sales proceeds go to the artists, the prison keeps the rest for expenses.

The exhibition space is the newly renovated multi-purpose hall of the prison. The institution is expecting numerous visitors again – and not just because of the works of art. Visitors also have the rare opportunity to look behind the walls of the prison. A true-to-scale replica of a detention room can be seen and there is information about training careers in the prison.
