Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli said in an interview with the The Athletic reveals he has had four trials with Premier League rivals Manchester United in the past but has always been turned down.

“I actually had four different trials at United when I was 13, 14, 15 and 16,” said the 20-year-old Brazilian, adding: “These were in Manchester, at the club’s training center, and I played there in the same age group as Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams.”

According to Martinelli, the Red Devils were not really interested in him, Martinelli continued: “They never told me they wanted me.” But the time in Manchester gave him “a foretaste and made it a little easier to adapt”. Today’s Olympic champion was even able to draw positive conclusions from the cancellation of the English record champions. “Even after those attempts, I always believed in myself. I always thought, ‘I can do it,'” Martinelli said.

He finally moved from Ituano FC to Arsenal FC in 2019 for around seven million euros. Brazil’s U23 international is under contract there until 2024. He is one of the strongest young players in the Premier League this season, recording four goals and three assists in 22 games.
