The advantages of the long kitchen
If the kitchen tends more and more often to impose itself as the heart of the house, this has not always been the case. Considered a purely functional space for decades, it has sometimes been assigned a cramped space. As the name suggests, the long kitchen was confined to a long and generally narrow room, which earned it the nickname “hallway kitchen”.
Today, long cooking is no longer confined to a choice dictated by imperatives. Fans of the open kitchen readily fall for this layout, which has more advantages than one might think:
- Compact, the long kitchen fits perfectly into the current trend, focused on minimalism;
- Grouping the zones together makes it possible to limit comings and goings;
- Because of its more modest dimensions, the long kitchen is often less expensive than a traditional U or L kitchen;

Fit out a long closed kitchen
The long closed kitchen – or hallway kitchen – often offers many possibilities! Depending on the configuration of the room, it even allows an authentic U-shaped layout.
In a sufficiently large space, we opt for a parallel layout. The trick: avoid tall units on either side, and group them on one side, so as not to clutter up the space. To visually enlarge the room, we play with the wall covering, choosing an accent wall. Here, we even invested the back wall, to fit out a bench: an option that is both trendy and very cozy!
In this hallway kitchen, we opted for a total immaculate white look, with a lacquered finish. The choice of contemporary minimalist furniture, devoid of handles, creates a nice feeling of space. The good idea: a black floor, which brings a downright stunning graphic touch, while enlarging the room.
Properly arranging a long kitchen means, above all, taking specific account of the peculiarities of the room. Here, we opted for furniture that is lightened on the sides, to be massive on the back wall, by being accessorized with discreet shelves, which are enough to visually expand the room. The idea to steal: the choice of discreet, but functional recessed spotlights.
A long kitchen to restructure the space
Open or semi-open, the long kitchen offers great possibilities to combine the useful with the decor, and create a structured interior with a strong personality.
In an apartment in the attic, it is a question of showing imagination to exploit the available surface without wasting a crumb. Adapting to all configurations, the long kitchen even slides over any wall. Add a bar, and you have a semi-open kitchen with a dining area!
Want to remodel an XXL space to make it more intimate? Optimize the partition by installing a lengthwise kitchen. Or better: use the kitchen as a partition!
Not quite open, not quite closed … Investing in a passageway that could have been lost, the “hallway kitchen” has never lived up to its name so well. In order to have maximum space in a long kitchen, we put on storage. The closed cupboards seduce by their capacity. One of the most effective tips not to overwhelm the decor: opt for two-tone furniture, which allows a row of elements to be forgotten.
Are you fond of colors with character, such as plum? Bet on kitchen furniture that alternates niches and solid facades, in particular if your lengthwise kitchen invests an XXL section of wall: the aesthetic will be less massive, and more dynamic!
The long kitchen is available in all styles of decoration. Here, we opted for a combination of white, wood and pastel. This typically Nordic palette offers the opportunity to alternate colors and finishes: asymmetrical and equipped with various elements, this pretty kitchen benefits from an aesthetic full of lightness.
Canon, the long kitchen that literally fits into the living room! This option requires a bit of cheating, because in reality it is the width of the wall which increases to give the impression that the kitchen is fitted. It is therefore most often reserved for interiors with large volumes. But the rendering is to die for!
