Armin Mueller-Stahl: “My feelings from back then are with me to this day”

The German actor Armin Mueller-Stahl has enjoyed success for decades – also in Hollywood. The war in Ukraine affects him. When the pressure on his soul becomes too great, he goes to his garage.

Interview: Felix Rettberg

At the end of World War II, you only survived because a Polish prisoner of war knocked a gun out of the hands of a Russian soldier. How close do you feel to the daily reports from Ukraine with such personal experiences?
War is the most disgusting thing people can do to each other. What you experience there always lives with you. My feelings from back then, they accompany me to this day.

In nightmares?
Yes, now and then. When the pictures from Ukraine are shown on TV, I would like to go into the long shot like in a film, i.e. in the camera position where everything can only be seen from afar. And when the pressure on my soul gets too great, luckily I still have my garage.
