ARD-DeutschlandTrend: 41 percent for early elections

As of: November 9th, 2023 11:55 p.m

Only just under a third of those surveyed speak in GermanyTrend for the ARD morning magazinein for the continued existence of the traffic light government. 41 percent are in favor of an early election – especially the supporters of one party.

There has long been great dissatisfaction with the current work of the federal government. This dissatisfaction is also reflected in the attitude towards the continued existence of the traffic lights: In GermanyTrend for the ARD morning magazine Only just under a third of those surveyed (32 percent) are in favor of the coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP continuing until the next regular federal election in 2025.

However, 41 percent of citizens are in favor of a new election before the end of the legislative period. 16 percent are counting on a coalition change and would welcome a grand coalition between the SPD and the CDU/CSU.

86 percent of AfD supporters support new elections

The call for a new election is clearest among AfD supporters. 86 percent of those surveyed are in favor of this. 39 percent of Union supporters support this. 34 percent vote for the formation of a grand coalition. The majority of supporters of the SPD (62 percent) and the Greens (80 percent) are in favor of continuing the traffic light coalition over the entire term of office.

The picture is more differentiated among FDP supporters. Although 47 percent are in favor of continuing the government with the SPD and the Greens, 39 percent of liberal voters are against it.

Measures to combat anti-Semitism do not go far enough

Citizens were again asked about the topic of anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitic crimes have increased significantly in Germany, especially after the terrorist organization Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th. In the past ARD GermanyTrend It emerged that the majority sees increasing anti-Semitism, across party camps.

The majority of citizens (56 percent) in the current survey would like more efforts to combat anti-Semitism in Germany. 23 percent of those surveyed believe the efforts are sufficient, 9 percent think they go too far.

Hardly any changes to the Sunday question

There is little movement on Sunday’s question: According to the survey, the Union could defend its top spot and would still be the strongest faction with 30 percent. The AfD would remain in second place with 21 percent, but compared to the last survey from November 2nd, it would be for the ARD GermanyTrend lose one percentage point.

The SPD would only get 15 percent (minus 1 percentage point) and, after the previous low point in October and a slight improvement in the previous week, would again achieve its weakest result since the 2021 federal election.

Alliance90/The Greens have recovered somewhat and would also reach 15 percent (plus 1 percentage point). The FDP can also make a slight increase and would be represented in the German Bundestag again with 5 percent. In the past GermanyTrend The Liberals had slipped to four percent for the first time since the traffic lights came into government.

The Left, on the other hand, would miss out and only receive four percent of the vote (-1 percentage point). The Free Voters remain at three percent.

Investigation facility

Population: Eligible voters in Germany
Collection method: Random-based telephone and online survey
Survey period: November 7th to 8th, 2023
Number of cases: 1,195 respondents (701 telephone interviews and 494 online interviews)
Weighting: Voting behavior according to sociodemographic characteristics and recall
Sunday question with separate weighting
Shfluctuation range:
2 percentage points for a share value of 10 percent
3 percentage points for a share value of 50 percent
Implementing institute: Infratest dimap

Results are rounded to whole percentages to avoid false expectations of precision. For all representative surveys, fluctuation ranges must be taken into account. In the case of a survey with 1,000 respondents, these amount to around three percentage points for large parties and around one point for smaller parties. In addition, the rounding error is significant for small parties. For these reasons, no party is shown below three percent in the Sunday question.
