One of the most frequently heard wishes from smartphone, tablet and notebook owners will continue to be longer battery life in 2023. Manufacturers like Apple have achieved the greatest gains in staying power in recent years by increasing energy efficiency. Now, according to media reports, Apple also wants to take a closer look at the energy source itself: The company is pursuing plans to use its own batteries with significantly improved performance from 2025.

The approach of developing something yourself is not new at Apple and is sometimes very successful. The recent release of the M3, the third Apple Silicon for the Mac, shows how such initiatives can lead to great progress. Other projects, such as Apple’s development of its own mobile phone chips to replace Qualcomm’s technology, are more difficult.
Project started in 2018
The South Korean electronics trade magazine ETNews reportsthat Apple was already working on its own batteries in 2018 and, among other things, had acquired patents and hired employees for this purpose. The aim of the development is to create new types of batteries that deliver significantly more power. Apple wants to make this possible by using other materials and a new composition of nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminum. Carbon nanotubes could therefore improve conductivity. In addition to increasing capacity, faster loading times should also be made possible.
Apple’s battery project, for which a former Samsung manager was hired, goes back to the alleged development of a car. The project is now aimed at mobile devices, including the Vision Pro. Apple’s first spatial computer is powered by battery packs, but these do not currently provide a long runtime. Completion of the Apple battery in 2025 could coincide with a further development of the Vision Pro, which has been speculated about for some time.
