Antony Blinken announced on Monday a 72-hour ceasefire in Sudan, where fierce fighting has pitted the ruling army against a paramilitary group for ten days.
“After intense negotiations over the past forty-eight hours, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have agreed to implement a nationwide ceasefire starting at midnight on April 24, to last sixty -twelve hours, ”said the head of American diplomacy in a press release. “During this period, the United States expects the army and the RSF to fully and immediately respect this ceasefire,” he added.
The American Secretary of State further indicates that the United States is working with its allies with a view to setting up a “commission” which would be responsible for negotiating a permanent cessation of hostilities in Sudan.
Many countries are carrying out repatriation operations for their nationals or their diplomatic personnel from Sudan, where the war between the army and the paramilitaries has been raging since April 15.
