Several bodies have been discovered on the coast near Antalya. Most of them could be migrants who have had an accident. This is indicated by the clothing of the dead.

At According to the German Press Agency (dpa), eight bodies washed up in Antalya within six days – five of them are said to be drowned migrants. The governor’s office in Antalya announced on Sunday evening that it was determined that the clothing and shoes of the five people were manufactured in Syria.

On Monday, two more dead people were recovered from a beach in Antalya, the dpa quoted the DHA news agency as saying. They have therefore not yet been identified.

The AFP agency also reported another dead person who was driven to the coast around 200 kilometers further west in Mugla province.

Antalya authorities see connection with boat accident in December

The governor’s office in Antalya also said that due to currents, wind and waves, it was assumed that at least five of the bodies had washed up after a boat carrying migrants sank. This is consistent with an event reported by the Lebanese embassy in Ankara on December 11th. Accordingly, contact had been lost with a boat with around 90 refugees that had been spotted off the Syrian-Lebanese coast on the way to Cyprus. The authorities are continuing to work to clarify the deaths, it said.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 3,000 migrants disappeared while fleeing across the Mediterranean last year. It was the highest number of accidents since 2017.

Another dead person who washed up in Antalya province was presumably a person who had been reported missing. According to Turkish authorities, it could be a young Turkish woman who disappeared in the coastal town at the beginning of January. According to media reports, this was confirmed by DNA analysis.
