Animal welfare violations: Slaughterhouse operator in Miltenberg returns license – Bavaria

After investigations into suspected serious animal welfare violations, the operator of a slaughterhouse in the Miltenberg district has now fundamentally withdrawn. “Before the EU approval was withdrawn by the authorities, the operator voluntarily returned it,” said the Miltenberg district office on Tuesday. Previously this had Main Echo reported.

There is no successor yet, according to the district office. On average, around 33 cattle of different ages were slaughtered at the slaughterhouse every week.

The Aschaffenburg public prosecutor’s office is investigating employees of the slaughterhouse and at least one animal owner, including for animal cruelty. The company, along with a slaughterhouse in Aschaffenburg, was targeted by the authorities after video footage from an animal rights organization was published.

Due to serious deficiencies in animal protection, the Miltenberg district office banned the affected slaughterhouse in the district from operating with immediate effect in the summer. It was said at the time that the material provided concrete evidence of sometimes serious animal welfare violations when unloading animals intended for slaughter and during stunning.
