Angry migrants disrupt traffic at Rhodes port

Some 400 migrants and refugees demonstrated on Sunday in the port of the island of Rhodes in Greece, disrupting traffic, to demand their immediate transfer elsewhere in the country, the coast guard reported to AFP.

Migrants prevented one boat from leaving and another from docking. Most of them arrived in Greece after rescues during the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean, these migrants were transported to Rhodes for their files to be processed.

10,790 migrants arrived in Greece

They demanded to be immediately transferred from this island to more appropriate reception structures or to mainland Greece, according to the coast guard. The port police began negotiations with the migrants.

According to official figures, 10,790 migrants and refugees arrived in Greece in the first eight months of 2023, double the 5,216 recorded during the same period last year.
