Angers, the greenest city in France, Rennes and Strasbourg stand out

It confirms its leadership position. The city of Angers has once again been designated as the greenest city among the 50 largest cities in France, announces the Observatory of Green Cities, which has just unveiled its new ranking, an exercise carried out every three years. It must be said that the city of King René has great advantages: “With a third of its total surface area dedicated to green spaces, Angers has a landscaped space designed for any inhabitant within 500 meters, and for 80% of the population within 300 meters,” indicates the observatory.

Difficult to fight, therefore, even if two cities stand out. Still in the West, Rennes takes second place in the ranking, gaining five ranks since 2020. All thanks to an “effective landscape strategy”: according to the observatory, a quarter of its total surface area (22%) is now dedicated to green spaces, and 63% of its roads are planted with trees. Absent until now from the ranking, Strasbourg is also a good student, in third position. And this is thanks to the 2020-2026 Canopy Plan, and the objective of planting 10,000 additional trees by 2030.

Vegetation is “growing in strength”

Lyon, Metz, Nantes, Caen complete this ranking, followed by Reims, Amiens and Paris. Four main categories were studied to establish it: green heritage, operation and organization, actions and initiatives, and awareness. “This edition shows us that throughout the territory, cities are continuing their greening and gaining momentum: increasing investments, multiplication of initiatives to raise awareness of biodiversity, training of agents dedicated to green spaces. »
