After more than 600 episodes: Angela Merkel says goodbye to the podcast with a vaccination appeal

Angela Merkel has been addressing the population via podcast since 2006.

In June 2006 Angela Merkel first recorded a podcast, now it’s over: After more than 600 episodes, the outgoing Chancellor says goodbye with an emotional appeal for vaccinations.

In her last podcast as Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) once again urged the citizens of the country to be vaccinated. There are currently “such an awful number of people who are killed by the virus every day,” she said. “It’s so bitter because it could be avoided.”

Merkel therefore urged the population to take the corona virus seriously. “Get vaccinated,” she said. Every vaccination helps, because it gives the vaccinated person security and a high vaccination rate ultimately helps everyone “as a country to leave this pandemic behind us”.

Angela Merkel: Podcast came regularly on weekends

“Unfortunately we have another difficult weeks ahead of us, which we can only cope with with a joint effort,” said Merkel in her weekly podcast. You wish that this would succeed together.

The Chancellor also drew a satisfied balance of her more than 600 podcast episodes, in which she had regularly addressed the population at weekends in recent years. With the first episode over 15 years ago, the format was “quite a specialty”. “I’ve always seen the podcast as a way to tell you directly about topics that are close to my heart,” she said. The podcast was particularly valuable to her in times of pandemic.
