Gambling turnover in France is up 3.5% in 2023 compared to 2022, a year in which the sector had already recorded a record, according to data published Monday by the National Gaming Authority (ANJ). This is the turnover of gambling in France in 2023. All types of games are seeing their gross gaming product (GRP) – the difference between players’ stakes and winnings paid out by operators – increase. The increase is particularly marked for casinos and online games, notably poker. Operators holding exclusive rights (Française des Jeux and PMU) still represent more than half of the activity.

Among them, four particularly stand out for the amounts of bets committed: football (4.4 billion euros in bets), tennis (1.9 billion), basketball (899 million) and rugby (247 million, with increased stakes in September and October during the World Cup).

This is the total gross gaming product (GRP) of online games in 2023 in France, up 7.2% compared to 2022. In detail, sports betting represents more than half of the GRP, followed by poker then horse racing betting. In total, 3.6 million people gambled online in 2023 in France, with an increase for poker and horse racing betting.
The president of the National Gaming Authority believes that “this growth makes the objective of reducing the number of excessive players all the more relevant”. The regulator fears a risk of intensification of gambling practices in a 2024 context marked by the holding of two major sporting events, Euro 2024 football and the Paris Olympic Games.
