A sexton was killed on Tuesday January 24 and a priest injured in a stabbing attack in a church in Algeciras, in southern Spain, a police source told AFP, adding that a man had been arrested.

An investigation has been opened for alleged acts of terrorism. It will be conducted by a magistrate of the National Audience, a court responsible in particular for terrorism cases, said the prosecution, without giving further details.

The assailant armed with a machete

The stabbing attack” happened “shortly before 8 p.m.in the church of San Isidro in Algeciras, the interior ministry said. One person was killed outside the church and one injured inside the church, the ministry added. A police source told AFP that the person killed was a sexton while one of the injured was a priest. According to this source, the assailant was dressed in a djellaba and “shouted somethingat the time of the attack.

Local media, based on testimonies, indicate that the assailant was armed with a machete with which he killed the sexton. “Facts are analyzed and investigated. It is not possible at this time to determine the nature of the attack“, assured for its part the Ministry of the Interior.
