At some point during the many months of his illness, Mr. Kiyak is allowed to go home to his daughter, although his daughter’s house is not his home at all, as it has been back in Turkey since his retirement. The visit to Germany was a routine visit, the examination in the hospital was a routine examination. Nobody, not Mr. Kiyak, not his daughter, expected that lung cancer would be found, that not only his life, but also his daughter’s life would be thrown out of control, in the hospital or now at her home.
