Ammergau Alps: Where the witches dance – Bavaria

The cabaret artist Karl Farkas (1893-1971) formulated the thesis that the Austrians and the Germans differ in their common language. But that’s not all. They probably also differ in their height measurements. Mount Säuling, which is located in the Ammergau Alps and is famous for its pyramid shape, which is covered in clouds in this photo, is 2047 meters high according to German measurements, while the Austrians report its height as 2048 meters. Since it can be climbed from both sides, at least every mountain hiker has the chance – depending on their condition – to choose the shorter or the longer version. From the summit there is a wonderful view of the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles and the Füssen lake landscape. In this idyll one could forget that the witches like to use the summit plateau of the Säuling as a dance floor, at least that’s what the legend says. Even the devil has been plagued by malice up here. It is said of him that he personally snatched a rock from the column and threw it in the direction of Roßhaupten. It’s a good thing that the evening bell rang, the stone crashed vertically onto the ground and remained lying in front of the village – until today.
