AMD announces Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F

AMD has announced the two desktop processors Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F. The whole thing took place on your own Beijing AI PC Innovation Summit event in China, which AMD executives used to reintroduce numerous processors. Company boss Lisa Su was also present on stage. The event was primarily about Hawk Point aka Ryzen 8000G and Ryzen 8040U/HS with integrated AI units, which AMD has long since introduced in the West.

Recently, AMD has started selling F versions of its desktop processors with the graphics unit disabled, just like Intel. It starts with the six-core Ryzen 5 7500F (from €165.21) as an entry into the AM5 platform.

The Ryzen 8000F is presumed to be a Ryzen 8000G with deactivated GPUs. The processors would therefore use Zen 4 cores with smaller caches than the desktop Ryzen 7000. The Ryzen 5 8400F could also have Zen 4c cores. It is questionable whether the integrated AI accelerator remains active, at least in the Ryzen 7 8700F.

So far, AMD has sold so-called APUs with a deactivated GPU without any suffix, such as the Ryzen 5 5500 (from €91.90). Those interested had to look closely to see that they use chips with smaller caches than the other Ryzen CPUs.

AMD has now introduced the F suffix after all standard Ryzen models have received a small graphics unit. Intel has been selling F processors since the Core i 9000 series from 2019, at that time the Core i7-9700F.

If AMD keeps its naming scheme for another generation, there could be 9700F processors from both AMD and Intel.
