Amazon receives a record fine of 32 million euros for monitoring its employees

The fine is extremely heavy, even when your name is Amazon. The France Logistics branch of the American online sales giant was fined 32 million euros by the National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties (Cnil) “for having set up an excessively intrusive system for monitoring the activity and performance of employees”, the independent administrative authority announced this Tuesday via a press release.

For the CNIL, the collection of data by scanners used by warehouse employees to process packages constitutes an “excessive activity and performance monitoring system”. These scanners record inactivity times greater than ten minutes or the rate at which packages are processed.
