Alert to questionable practices of temporary furniture sellers

Too good to be true. Even if it sticks a little to your butt when you sit on it, in no case should your need to change the old, stained sofa in the living room override your reason. Especially if you live in the North. Because it is in this department that unscrupulous furniture sellers are currently operating, we learned from the departmental directorate for population protection (DDPP).

The DDPP launched, this Thursday, a “call for vigilance” aimed at consumers who would have been the target of a “solicitation or telephone canvassing” promising them “gifts” or inviting them to “participate in a lottery” in a furniture store. By furniture store, the DDPP means pop-up stores, generally set up for short periods in vacant commercial premises.

Moldy gifts and pressure shots

The consumer police point out that some of these furniture companies are known to target the elderly in particular, and to use “deceptive commercial practices”. It lists, among other things, low-value gifts, artificially inflated displayed prices to grant big discounts, poor quality products or even lottery winnings turning into vouchers…

Add to that sellers who put pressure on you to buy something you don’t need and failure to respect the withdrawal period of 14 days from signing the contract, you have a winning combo. At least for the store.

So if you smell a dirty trick, run away. Once out of reach of the seller’s clutches, the DDPP encourages you to report the scam “by calling 03.28.07.22.00” or by email to [email protected].
