It’s strange: Since Stefan Bachmann has been director of the Schauspiel Köln, which he has been since September 2013, he has never performed at the Schauspiel Köln. The house on Offenbachplatz, which was in need of renovation, became a long-term construction site, and the temporary home on the other side of the Rhine, which was used as a makeshift, became a permanent home. But what a thing! Anyone who associates the so-called depot on the Carlswerk site in Cologne-Mülheim with an inhospitable industrial warehouse and barracks will be amazed at the cool, urban chic and top-quality furnishings of this quarter, which has advanced from temporary to cultural location. The theater has done a lot of work here. Bachmann will no longer be there to see the reopening of the theater, which was announced for autumn. He takes over the Burgtheater in Vienna.
