Ajax Amsterdam and Marc Overmars go their separate ways. The ex-professional is said to have sent “inappropriate” messages to employees.

Marc Overmars is no longer football director at Ajax Amsterdam. As the club announced, “inappropriate” messages to employees are the reason for the separation.

“I’m ashamed,” Overmars is quoted as saying in the club’s announcement. “Unfortunately, I didn’t understand that I was crossing a line with that. That was made clear to me in the past few days,” said the former football director: “I see no other option but to leave Ajax.”

Overmars: “I apologize”

In addition, the 48-year-old, who has been employed at Ajax since 2012 and only extended his contract to 2026 last December, asked for forgiveness: “I apologize. Certainly this behavior is unacceptable for someone in my position. I see that now too . But it’s too late.”

Ajax board chairman Leen Meijaard spoke of a “dramatic situation for everyone involved. It is devastating for the women who had to deal with the behavior. When we found out about it, we acted immediately and carefully considered what was best to do – all in consultation with CEO Edwin van der Sar and supported by an external expert.”
