An Englishman had his Airpods stolen on a flight. Instead of just buying new ones, he went hunting – and finally got his property back.

Lewis Ellis was frustrated when he realized after a flight from Bangkok to Doha that he had left his Airpods on the plane. But while he was initially angry at himself for his own negligence, his anger turned a little later on someone else: Ellis had to realize that someone had taken his headphones.

When his hopes of getting the devices back at the airport were not fulfilled, the man from Manchester checked his cell phone’s “Find my app” function. With it, the location of Apple devices can be tracked with the iPhone. As Ellis could see from the data, his headphones (and whoever took them) were already in another part of the world.

Hunt for stolen airpods

Instead of checking the matter off and buying new Airpods, the 31-year-old accepted the challenge. He desperately wanted to catch the thief – and have his belongings back. He always had an eye on the location of his headphones via the app. “I could watch them traveling around the world for no less than five months,” he told the Nice to Know portal.

When his devices returned to Doha after a trip to the Himalayas, Ellis couldn’t take it anymore. He decided to follow along with a friend and catch the thief in Doha: “We were hunting. It was an adventure and felt like a treasure hunt in the movies.”

6,500 kilometers, costs 2,300 euros

In Doha, he located the apartment of the wrongful owner of his Airpods, stalked him for days and finally confronted him. He was able to prove that the headphones belonged to him with the manufacturer’s box, on which the serial number was printed. In fact, he said he got his possessions back without any problems.

Ellis traveled 6,500 kilometers by plane for this. The trips cost him the equivalent of more than 2300 euros. Nevertheless, he had a lot of fun chasing the lost Airpods, says Lewis Ellis: “I didn’t really expect to get them back, but it’s great that I managed to find them – now I have to don’t buy me new ones.”
