Anyone who books a room through Airbnb probably doesn’t want to be filmed. The online platform is therefore tightening its rules: previously, security cameras were allowed indoors if this was pointed out. This is now over.
As of April 30, the use of security cameras inside Airbnb properties is prohibited. Previously, hosts were allowed to use cameras in shared spaces such as living rooms or hallways – as long as this was explicitly stated before booking and they were clearly visible.
According to Airbnb, the tightening of the rules will only affect a small proportion of the accommodations listed. Violations after April 30th may result in properties or host accounts being removed from the platform. In the past, individual Airbnb guests have reported discovering hidden cameras in accommodations.
Outdoor cameras still permitted
The tightening of the rules affects the cameras located inside the property. Cameras that are located outside the accommodation, such as in doorbells, are exempt from the ban. But stricter rules also apply here: the landlord must disclose where the outside cameras are located. In addition, these must not be aimed at outdoor showers or saunas.
Volume meters, which are intended to detect parties that are prohibited in accommodation, are also still permitted. But a guest also needs to know about such devices beforehand. There is an exception for hotels that offer their rooms via Airbnb. Cameras remain permitted in the lobby, hallways and restaurants.
