A loud bang and a column of smoke: in the middle of Munich’s most important train route, there was an explosion on Wednesday lunchtime. Four construction workers were injured, some seriously. In the meantime, there has been an enormous impact on train traffic. According to information from the fire brigade and police, an aerial bomb from the Second World War exploded during drilling work in the area of the Donnersbergerbrücke.
Four injured – OP saves the life of the seriously injured
An excavator was overturned by the force of the bomb explosion, and the window panes in the vicinity vibrated. One construction worker was seriously injured and three others were slightly injured. After initial medical care, the seriously injured man was transported to the shock room of a Munich clinic. The hospital announced on Wednesday evening that his condition was stable after a four-hour operation. The man’s leg was almost torn off by the detonation. An interdisciplinary team was able to reconstruct the leg, meanwhile it is also supplied with blood again.
Police and fire brigade on a large scale
According to information from the police and fire brigade, the detonation occurred near the railroad tracks at the construction site for the second main S-Bahn line. The tracks themselves were not affected, according to the fire department. The S-Bahn trains on the main line were stopped immediately and some of them were evacuated. There was a lot of damage to vehicles and buildings.
The police and fire brigade went on a large-scale operation. Around 70 fire fighters and more than 40 police officers were on site, and two police helicopters circled the area. Together with the rescue service, the firefighters took care of the injured construction workers. In addition, specialists in explosive ordnance disposal were on duty to examine the remains of the bomb. The police operation has now ended and clean-up work is still taking place.
