In Ahrenshoop on the Baltic Sea, a bunker slipped off the cliffs overnight. The facility dates back to GDR times and was recently a popular lost place

In Ahrenshoop in the Vorpommern-Rügen district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there was a bunker down the cliffs and into the weekend Baltic Sea slipped. Ahrenshoop’s mayor Benjamin Heinke informed about the incident in a Facebook post on Sunday. Accordingly, the system crashed on Sunday night or in the early morning hours.

According to the “Ostsee Zeitung”, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Environment Minister Till Backhaus only warned last week against entering the cliffs in the region that have been softened by rain. The risk of collapses and landslides was so high that certain sections were closed due to danger to life.

Ahrenshoop: Bunker was a popular lost place

According to the newspaper, the bunker complex was a popular lost place in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that regularly attracted curious people. According to NDR information, the bunker facility in the GDR was reached during the Cold War towards the end of the 1950s. An NVA observation company was stationed. However, the bunker had not been in use for a long time and parts of the facility had collapsed years ago. How the remains lying on the beach should now be dealt with will be clarified in consultation with the responsible authorities, Heinke wrote on Facebook.
