after Oudéa-Castéra’s remarks, teachers call for a strike

In a press release, the National Union of Secondary Education (Snes) and the FSU denounce a “provocation” by the new Minister of National Education. Newly named, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra in fact fueled the anger of teachers on Friday by justifying her decision to transfer her children to the private sector by his “frustration” with the “lots of hours that were not seriously replaced” in the public. Comments made during his first trip, alongside Gabriel Attal, his predecessor and current Prime Minister.

Confident to have “got fed up, like hundreds of thousands of families”, the one nicknamed “AOC” confirmed, as mentioned by Mediapart, having opted for the Stanislas middle school. This private Catholic establishment is the subject of an investigation launched in early 2023 by the General Inspectorate after accusations of homophobic and sexist abuses relayed in the press.

A meeting between the minister and the unions on Monday

For the Snes-FSU, the minister made a “lunar speech” and “unworthy remarks” in “a violent attack against public education, discrediting the quality of supervision”. The union recalls that the State is responsible for “replacement problems in public schools”. “Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, Emmanuel Macron’s minister, takes stock of Emmanuel Macron’s educational policy…,” we can read in the press release.

While a meeting with the minister and the unions is planned for Monday, January 15, the Snes and the FSU “with other union organizations” are calling for a strike on Thursday, February 1 to “demand[r] better paid, respected, protected staff, improved working and study conditions.”

For its part, the National Federation of Education, Culture and Professional Training (Fnec-FP-FO) denounced “unbearable contempt” from the minister and called for a strike and “demonstrates under the windows” of the ministry on January 25.
