After more than two months of ban, we can again eat mussels and clams from Thau

You can once again eat mussels and clams from the Etang de Thau. The heavy restriction measures, which were imposed on these shells since December 30, have been lifted, announced on Friday, the prefecture of Hérault.

On January 19, the State services put an end to the ban on the harvesting, fishing, transport, marketing and consumption of oysters. But these measures had been maintained for mussels, “due to contamination by a toxin”, and extended, as a precaution, to clams. From now on, all the shellfish from the Thau pond can “be consumed without restriction”.

Put in place just before New Year’s Eve on December 31, these measures caused a shortfall of 6 million euros for the shellfish farmers of Thau, had learned 20 minutes, in January. Strangled by these regular bans, the Regional Mediterranean Shellfish Committee (CRCM) has decided to file a complaint against the urban area of Sète, for the dumping of 33,000 m3 of untreated raw water into the marine environment, in contact with production. The community indicates that it has made many efforts since the beginning of the 2000s to improve the quality of the water in the pond.
